Be your own bookkeeper?

QuickBooks offers a way for Tradesmen to dispense with a bookkeeper and do your own books. This can both save you money and enable you to always have up-to-date information on how your company is doing. Not to mention being able to hand professional-looking quotes and invoices to your customers.

Having said that it is very important you enter information into QuickBooks correctly as bad bookkeeping will both cost you more in accountancy fees and, more importantly, produce incorrect VAT returns.

QuickBooks has been designed to be easier to understand

QuickBooks was designed to be used by the 'man in the street'. One great feature of it is the ability to 'drill down' throughout most of the package. In other words, if you click on say a sales or a purchase figure you will see before you the actual sales or purchase invoice that you originally made out.

Can't I just use an Excel spreadsheet?

Indeed the Excel spreadsheet has been very popular and is a great step up from the old hand-written accounts book at the entry level, but it can become very complicated when you want to use it for VAT calculations and reports.
